  • Welcome to the 2020 Bay Area RNA Club Meeting

The conferences opens up with a brief welcome and to introduce a few meeting highlights.  Things are different this year as we are 100% in the cloud.  And we are fully embracing the international community, with attendees from around the world.

For our new attendees, please know that the Bay Area RNA Club is about collaboration and sharing of ideas. Together we are dedicated to helping our net generation of scientists achieve great success through sharing and collaboration. We encourage presentation of unpublished results and sharing reagents.  We also remind everyone to act respectfully and consider inherent bias and cultural differences as we mingle and share science.

This year we are using the Nooks platform for all presentations and the developers will give a brief tutorial on how to navigate the meeting.  The Stanford Daily recently published a story about this new platform which was developed by undergraduates.

9:20am - 10:00am

  • 2020 BARC Keynote Lecture

    Angela Brooks, PhD

The short and the long of cancer RNA sequencing

The Brooks lab has been developing computational approaches to analyze long-read nanopore sequencing data, with the eventual goal of directly sequencing RNA molecules in primary cancer samples, for a complete picture of cancer RNA alterations. Toward this goal, they have used long-read cDNA sequencing in cancer samples and cell lines to identify full-length transcripts that are associated with cancer mutations in splicing factors. Dr. Brooks will present analysis of direct RNA sequencing from cell lines allowing for the identification of alternative transcript isoforms and their association with allele expression, RNA modifications, and poly(A) tail length. Their work demonstrates the potential utility of nanopore sequencing in identifying disease-associated transcripts that may serve as biomarkers of potential prognostic or therapeutic relevance.

10:00am - 10:40am

  • Concurrent Speaker Session One

Speaker Session One contains concurrent talks covering Gene Regulation and RNA Mechanisms.

Talks from these two topics are held in Virtual Rooms titled Gene Regulation and RNA Mechanisms. • Mentoring Workshops & Industry Roundtable

We have organized a number of events to promote trainee development. These include Mentoring Workshops and Industry Roundtables. Attendees not attending these events are encouraged to visit the Lobby for a virtual cup of tea.

12:30pm - 1:00pm

  • FLASH Talks

We are re-introducing Flash Talks this year-- giving each attendee ONE minute to present an overview of their research. This is a great way to lure attendees to your Poster Presentation. No need to schedule a Flash Talk-- are open floor, meaning that walk-up presenters are invited. This event is on a first come, first serve basis.

1:00pm - 1:40pm

  • Digital Poster Session One

All poster presenters are scheduled this year-- offering each presenter the opportunity to visit others posters and mingle with colleagues.  If you are scheduled during the Digital Poster Session One, remain in your room during the scheduled time and welcome any new visitors to your scientific world.

1:40pm - 2:20pm
