Karen Artiles is a staff scientist and lab manager in the Fire laboratory in the Stanford School of Medicine Department of Pathology. Karen values basic research as the underlying foundation of many cutting-edge technologies. Karen has extensive training in classical genetics (yeast, fly, and worm model systems) complimented by bioinformatic and biochemical approaches. Her recent work has focused on engineered non-mendelian genetics, long reads sequencing to fill gaps in the C. elegans genome, and most recently metagenomic sequencing to search for potential biological causes of Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology (CKDu). Karen holds a Ph.D. in Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology from University of California Santa Cruz and a B.A. in Biological Sciences from Northwestern University. Karen has also held a lifelong passion for art and has participated in several open studios.
