Pronouns: she/her

Dr. Alka joined the lab as a Postdoctoral researcher in 2021. She has earned her Ph.D. in reproductive biology - understanding the epigenetics of male infertility, from National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi, India. Soon after joining the lab, Alka won the IBSC-CIRM postdoctoral fellowship for her work on stem cells. Alka's major project goals include dissecting the mechanism for the soma-germline transfer of small RNAs, using polymorphic tRNAs and single cell small RNA sequencing. She is also working on revealing the role of specific microRNAs in embryonic development. Her long term goals are to elucidate the mechanism for how environmental factors like diet, stress, certain chemicals, etc; can alter the small RNA profile of sperm and cause developmental defects or disease predisposition to the offspring.
